Hummingbirds Are Amazing
Hummingbirds are truly one of the most fascinating groups of birds on the planet.
Of all birds, hummingbirds have the fastest metabolism, the largest heart in proportion to body size, the fastest heart and wing beats, the most aerobatic flight, the most brilliant feather iridescences and one of the highest rates of nesting success.
Hummingbirds are the lightest bird, weighing just 1/10th of an ounce. They also have the smallest brain and are virtually incapable of walking. And because of their diminutive size, hummingbirds have been known to fall prey to Bull Frogs, Praying Mantis and large spiders.
Unbelievably, hummingbirds may ingest one to three times their body weight in solid food and nectar every day. To accomplish this amazing feat, their bills and tongues have evolved into incredibly efficient feeding tools.
Hummingbirds use the flexible tip of their bills to capture insects and insect eggs on the ground and on plants. They love spider eggs.
Despite popular belief, hummingbirds do not feed on nectar by sucking it up with their bills; they actually lap it up by dipping their forked, open-grooved tongues into nectar up to 12 times a second.
To see this amazing tool in action, use a Wild Birds Unlimited Hummingbird Feeder. With their clear plastic bases, you will be able to witness the rapid lapping action of these fascinating hummingbirds.
